Day 40 - July 17

(A) Today we decided to drive up to Glasgow. Because Sterling and I are such big fans of the show “Still Game”, and because that show was based in Glasgow, we sought out one of the main filming locations. Here it is…

We’re not quite as old as Jack and Victor (the main characters in the show), but we do often feel the need to remind others — and ourselves — that we are still game.

Then we went to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It’s big and it’s free. It’s got tons of stuff, from animals and fossils to paintings and sculptures. It’s got an Ancient Egypt area and a bunch of suspended plaster heads. There’s also an airplane from WWII hanging from the ceiling. A Spitfire.

You may have heard of Lord Kelvin. He was, according to Wikipedia, a Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. ‘Natural philosophy’ is the attempt to understand the natural world. Nowadays we call it ‘science’. If you’ve ever needed to know the value of absolute zero (the low limit of temperature), then you’ve relied on Kelvin’s calculations. I think he looks like the neighbor in the movie “Home Alone”.

From there we went for some lunch. We found a Spanish tapas restaurant and had our fill of delicious grub. When we were nearly finished, a waiter came to our table and told us that the waitstaff and cooks would be eating a meal together, but that we should wave at them if we needed them. Then they all sat at some tables in the corner and ate together. I don’t know why I found that charming, but I did. At the food service jobs I’m familiar with, you have to squeeze in a break whenever you can. You eat by yourself, and sometimes have to sneak bites of your food (as it gets closer to room temperature) while you keep working. But at this tapas place, the whole staff shared a meal together. I think that’s nice.

After that, we walked to the campus of the University of Glasgow. I’m telling you, it’s beautiful. It was founded in 1451 and it appears to have aged very well.

I was really charmed by our brief visit to Glasgow.

On the drive home we stopped by a waterfall. Mia had seen it on our way north, and we made a mental note to seek it out when we drive back south. We found it, and I’m glad we did.

See if you can spot the difference between the first two photos.

(A) Back home we go. That’s the plan, anyway. Our flight out of New York was delayed a few hours, but we were notified early and didn’t...
